Allen received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance degree from William Paterson University. He studied bass with Rufus Reid and Todd Coolman and studied Latin music with Chico Mendoza.

For the past 15 years Allen has been a freelance musician performing at NYC clubs, including CBGB’s, The Bitter End, The Bottom Line, Village Gate, Dharma and Zinc Bar.

In 2005 he played on Raphael Cruz’s CD “Bebop Timba.” This CD was nominated for a Grammy in the Latin Jazz category.

Currently in Portland, Allen is performing with 2007 Muddy Nominees “Kevin Selfe and the Tornadoes” and often plays with powerhouse vocalist Rae Gordon as well.

Allen has a passion for teaching as well. He has taught for over 10 years and focuses on becoming a well-rounded musician able to adapt to any situation. Allen has a Bass Instructional DVD from Millennium Interactive’s Fun to Know series. Here is an online review:

"It’s refreshing to see a popular instrument like the electric bass being taught on DVD without overuse of TAB notation. Allen Markel may not seem so exciting a bass player as some of the other longer haired guys (Allen has none!), but he teaches a great foundation for anyone who really wants to learn this instrument and become a good player. There is music notation to print out and Allen does more in-depth teaching of the basics than the other starter DVDs. This is the DVD I would give to my kids if bass was what they wanted to play."
